Washington and Pulaski will tip off The City Review in what will be the second of two matchups between the MCC Blue Division foes (Washington will host the first game on Jan. 31). Rudy Baker is a name to know for the Purgolders; Baker has posted big scoring numbers throughout the season, including 31 points against MHSA, 24 points against Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy, and 20 points points at Green Bay Preble.
In another rematch of a December contest, two Gold Division foes will square off in the first girls game of the day. Reagan senior Deriya Wilson totaled 21 points in the Huskies’ 56-48 home win over Riverside on Dec. 11. For the season, Wilson currently leads the team with 17.0 points per game.
Audubon has quickly proven itself as one of the top teams in the MCC Blue Division, and features a roster filled with playmakers. Keep an eye on Quintyn Sandlin-Robinson, who averaged 22.0 points per game in the Cardinals’ first five contests. Riverside has not had the same success in the win column this year, but with three of their losses totaling just 11 points, the Tigers may be ready to turn a corner in the second half of the season.
MSL and Rufus King have quickly put together a strong rivalry at the top of the MCC Gold Division over the past three years. In 2021-22, Rufus King won both games by a combined eight points, including a hard-fought 70-65 win at The City Review that featured three future Division I players on the court (Rufus King: Imani Warren (New Mexico State), MSL: Jayla Butler (Bellarmine, Univ. of Maryland-Eastern Shore), Ja’Cia Cunningham (Chicago State)). The following year, Rufus King took all three matchups, highlighted by a statement win in the MCC Gold Division conference tournament championship game. In 2023-24, however, the pendulum swung to the Hawks, as MSL won two of three, including the conference tournament title.
Rufus King took the first game 61-48 at home earlier this season, as Generals’ sophomore Naomi Wilson (20 points) and Hawks’ junior Savanna Davis (24 points) went toe to toe. If history is any indication, the return game at The City Review might not be the last time we see these two MCC powers square off this year.
Primetime at the Al McGuire Center will pit two interdivisional opponents against each other, as MSL represents the MCC Blue Division, while WCLL slots into this game from the MCC White Division. The Hawks are led by the three-headed attack of Amaris Hunt (22.2 points and 4.1 assists per game), Manning Shareef (19.9 points and 13.7 rebounds per game), and Taylor Williamson (14.8 points and 2.5 assists per game).
MSL knocked off WCLL 92-75 last season, though the Wizards return nearly an entirely new roster in 2024-25. As one of the few returning upperclassmen, Adam Turay has taken on a larger role for WCLL this season. He finished with 35 points in a non-conference game against Brodhead in the New Glarus Holiday Classic in December.
